Season Opening news......
Last year’s ‘season’ was once again heavily rain affected. 7 completed league games are required to constitute a league. Langholm managed to win 6 games out of 6 but failed to get the 7 played. We therefore were ‘eventually’ crowned champions after a fair few meetings and controversy. So 2 in a row it is, or 4 in a row if you discount our 2006 season away in the National Leagues. Either way, a magnificent achievement for 2008 captain Scott Turnbull and his team. 2009 see’s Craig ‘Mucky’ McNeill take on the 1st XI captaincy hoping for some decent weather. It promises to be a challenging year, especially with the temporary retirement of our club stalwart and best batsman Jamie Glover. However, it’s exciting times at St.B just now. The club and ground has never looked so good, for the first time in over 20 years we are running a 2ndXI which will compete on Sundays in the Border reserve league and in an effort to smarten up our training nights Gordon Barkham is going to coach our Senior players. >>> New emphasis is being placed on our Junior setup with the club committed to drive progress in this area and work towards the Bronze “Top Club” award. >>> The addition of our 2ndXI means that nearly every weekend there will be a Saturday & Sunday game, we feel it is crucial to give our promising youngsters as well as our Sunday Players more chance to bat and bowl and progress their skills. All Sunday games will be a relaxed affair therefore anybody wanting to begin playing or maybe some ex-players looking for the odd game, we’d love to see you at the club. Thomas Goodman our Rasta friend from St.Lucia will be captaining the 2nd XI.
>>> Speaking of St.Lucia! Despite the issues with the economy and the credit crunch, our St.Lucia Tour is most definitely on – we have 11 paid up Players + a few supporters and will be booking the flights and Hotel package in the next few months. We have a full itinerary planned including a game at the St.Lucia national stadium where England have just played. This tour is unprecedented for the club and we’d love your support! Any more Players or supporters would be most welcome, contact details are on the separate Tour update sheet.
>>> Our thanks once again go to Gordon for maintaining the ground to such a high standard. Further thanks must also go to Ian Athey who is continuing as our scorer and Agnes Laing (Honorary Membership Secretary and 100+ Club Secretary). Agnes in particular is very keen to hear from anybody who would like to join our 100+ club. Full details overleaf. Also - If there are any budding Umpires, willing helpers or even those who just fancy a pint and a great setting to relax at then please pop along.
New players are always required. If you know anybody who’d like a game please badger them to come along or contact Craig McNeill on 07825177986. We have League, Cup & Friendly fixtures therefore all standards ranging from total beginner to budding Freddie Flintoff’s are most welcome!
